Im interested in authentic luxury because:
I am part of a non-profit organization that rescues, rehabilitates and educates children found illegally working in the handmade carpet industry. How can we allow something so beautiful to be made through the suffering of children...

Consider who makes your products and how they are made...

Ethically produced rugs - authentic luxury extreme

I suggest you check out the following rug designers. You'll find some of the most beautiful rugs in the world and all have been made in the most responsible manner - no child labor!

Each and every one of these companies have required their factories to be inspected and monitored to ensure there are no children involved in the production of their beautiful carpets. Now I call THAT authentic luxury!

A quote from one supposedly concerned manufacturer...

This is an actual quote from the owner of a very high end US handmade rug importer;

“I am not naïve to any portion of your sales pitch. Also I am not concerned about assuring consumers of anything. I answer to a higher authority…..” - Tom D.

The "sales pitch" in question - RugMark asking him to inspect and certifiy his manufacturers to ensure no children were involved in making his exquisite rugs...

His not being concerned about assuring consumers… Continue

A bit about RugMark

RugMark USA is part of a global organization, RugMark Foundation International (RMI), working to combat illegal child labor in the handmade carpet industry of South Asia. One of the world’s first labor monitoring organizations, RMI uses market forces to change illegal labor practices overseas.

RugMark USA is one of six independent national offices that implement RMI programs under a franchise-type structure. RMI program areas include workplace monitoring and product certification;… Continue

Back in 2003 I think I brought over Kailash (I think he was a founder of rugmark,no?) to Italy to particiapte in a roundtable and then later as part of Kerry Kennedy Cuomo's SPeak Truth to Power translated into Italian. Did nothing come of those engagements? In answer ot your question, my latest fun endeavour (regularily I have been consulting for luxury brands in sustainability for about 7 years now) MarinePositive is the marine equivalent to carbon neutral which goes beyond neutrality to positivity. It is just in its infancy while we find initial investor/sponsors and try to design a good profit/charity infrastructure mix. One other angle for you guys is Newport Beach area of California where I inquired a few rug sellers if their products were compliant with rugmark and they had never heard of it but were interested especially to use for marketing differentiation strategies. Best, S.

Hi Scott- Living in Italy I found that it is often a traditional wedding gift to give rugs (for newlyweds new home). Perhaps you could do an interesting marketing campaign here (together with a large rug vendor) to get more of your message across.
